For the Love of Swallows Necklace

This Follow the Swallow designed necklace features a pair of swallows joined together by a solid sterling silver heart which has a north star and a garnet at it's centre.

The story of the Swallow ......

The Swallow is associated with navigation...... and mariners. It is an old nautical tradition that a sailor can only get a swallow tattoo after they have sailed over 5,000 nautical miles. Swallows were considered good luck because they do not fly far from land so when a sailor sights a swallow they know they are close to land and if they follow the swallow it would lead them home.

The heart represents the love and loyalty of the swallows as they mate for life and always return to the same nest.

The north star inside the heart refers to another nautical tradition. Before the invention of the compass, mariners and explorers looked to the North Star (Polaris) to determine which way was north. As the North Star is directly above the North Pole it was always visible at night, unlike other constellations that moved over the night sky as the earth turned. If the sailors drew a vertical line from the North Star to the horizon they knew that was due north so they could navigate where south, west and east were from that point. 

In this design the north star symbolises navigation and in particular the idea that the swallows always find their way back home.

This idea of navigation with the North Star can also be considered on a personal level.

Only you can decide where your north star is by considering what is important to you. What lights your fire, what are your life goals, personal values, principles, dreams and aspirations? All of these answers combined point to your own North Star.

• The chain is hand-made from 9.25 sterling silver 0.9 mm wire.
• The swallows are solid sterling silver
• The heart is made from solid sterling silver and has a 2mm garnet at its centre.
• The red beads on the chain are garnets
• The black beads on the chain are fire-polished glass beads from the Czech Republic.

The necklace can be purchased with a 45 cm length or a 53 cm length.

This necklace can be customised to any length that you require.
